Common Scams & Safety Tips
Stay safe while traveling with these essential tips
Common Scams to Watch Out For
- The Friendly Local Scam - Someone approaches you claiming to be a local who wants to practice English or show you a "special" place tourists don't know about. They may lead you to overpriced shops or restaurants where they get a commission.
- The Taxi Meter "Malfunction" - Taxi drivers claim the meter is broken and then charge an exorbitant fare. Always insist on using the meter or agree on a price before starting your journey.
- The Spill Trick - Someone "accidentally" spills something on you, and while they help clean it up, an accomplice pickpockets you. Be wary of sudden distractions in crowded areas.
- The Fake Police Officer - Individuals posing as police officers ask to check your wallet for counterfeit bills or request to see your passport. Real police rarely ask to handle your belongings directly.
- The Free Bracelet/Gift - Someone puts a bracelet on your wrist or hands you a "gift" and then demands payment. Politely but firmly refuse unsolicited items.
